Uses

Acivir (Acyclovir) is prescribed to help manage or prevent various health problems such as chicken pox, skin or mouth infections, genital herpes, and in some cases shingles. It is an anti-viral medication which works by targeting the viral cells and inhibiting their reproductive function so that they weaken and die off without having reproduced.

Dosage and Administration

Correct dosage depends on the precise condition being treated and the individual patient. Strictly follow the dose you have been prescribed by your physician.

A typical dosage for patients with shingles is 1 tablet, taken every 4 hours, for a period of 1 week. For patients with herpes dosage is usually 2 to 5 tablets a day, for a period lasting 5 to 10 days.

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, changes in appetite, headaches. If any persist or bother you, inform your physician promptly.

Less common side effects which should be reported to your physician as soon as possible include numbness, tingling, leg pain or discomfort, sore throat, dizziness, or weakness.
