Azithromycin is an broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat many bacterial infections including respiratory infections, skin infections, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), pelvic inflammatory disease and eye infections.
What is Azithromycin?
Azithromycin is an broad-spectrum antibiotic and is used to treat a wide variety of mild to moderate bacterial infecions. Azithromycin in indicated for:
- upper respiratory tract infections and lower respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis or strep throat, tonsillitis, sinus infections, worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, middle ear infection etc)
- skin infections including abscess and ulcers
- sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) of the cervix or urinary tract (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, etc.)
- pelvic inflammatory disease (infection and inflammation of uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries)
- eye infection (chlamydia trachomatis conjunctivitis and trachoma)
Who can take Azithromycin?
Azithromycin is well-tolerated, however you should tell your physician of any allergies or regular medications you are taking.
Azithromycin Dosage
For treatment of sexually transmitted diseases the recommended dosage is two tablets as a single dose. For other infections azithromycin is usually taken daily. Your physician will advise the correct dosage for your condition.
Azithromycin Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- oral thrush or vaginal
- nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- dizziness, headache, spinning sensation
- tiredness and/or drowsiness
- stomach pain
- indigestion
- wind
- constipation
- diarrhoea
- loose bowel motions
- muscle aches or joint aches
- hearing loss or ringing in the ears
- altered taste and smell
Any of the following side-effects should be immediately reported to your physician before taking another dose:
- severe persistent diarrhoea (loose bowel motions)
- fast or irregular heartbeats
- chest pain
- symptoms of sunburn such as redness, itching, swelling or blistering that may occur more quickly than normal
- hives, itching or skin rash
- fainting
- yellowing of the eyes or skin, also called jaundice
- bleeding or bruising more easily than normal, reddish or purplish blotches under the skin
- signs of frequent or worrying infections such as fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers
- blood in the urine or bowel motions
- convulsions (fits)
- severe upper stomach pain, often with nausea and vomiting.
