Use
Champix (Varenicline) is given to tobacco smokers to quit smoking. It does not contain nicotine but instead mimics its effects inside the brain. It helps to inhibit the need to smoke and reduce the withdrawal symptoms that smokers often suffer from when quitting nicotine.
Dosage and Administration
You should always follow your physician’s advice when taking any medication to limit the risks of side effects, as safe dosage is determined from many personal factors (i.e age, weight, current health etc).
You may be advised to take 2 tablets a day at separate times for 3 months. Dosage may be increased if the tablets are showing positive benefits.
You should start it a fortnight or month before actually quitting smoking as this allows for some time for the medicine to begin its effects which are enabling you to gradually decrease your nicotine addiction. You can take it without regards to food but if you feel any nausea or have problems sleeping, you may find that taking it after a meal or a snack will decrease these side effects.
Side Effect
The most common side effect of Champix (Varenicline) is nausea, although generally it is a well tolerated drug. Other reports of symptoms have included:
- Insomnia or unusual dreams
- Gassiness
- Headaches
- An allergic reaction, which requires emergency medical attention (symptoms include rashes, hives, swelling, trouble breathing etc)
You should promptly inform your physician of any side effects which occur from using Champix as a decrease in your dosage may lower these symptoms.
Precautions
This drug can impair the user’s judgement and concentration levels through causing dizziness. You should not drive or use heavy machinery until you are fully aware of how this drug affects you.
Not everyone is suitable to use Champix (varenicline). Some patients with existing conditions or who are using other medication may find the risks of side effects out-weigh any benefits of this drug.
As an example, pregnant women or those breast feeding should not use this drug, neither should potential parents or any teenagers under 18 years old.
Those with previous or existing conditions, such as mental disorders or kidney conditions will need to discuss the risks and benefits more thoroughly with their physician before using this drug.
