Uses
Heparin is prescribed for patients who need to prevent and treat blood clots. It helps to break up existing clots as well as prevent new ones from forming. It is an anti-coagulant which works by thinning the blood making clotting more difficult. This medication is useful for a variety of different situations including after surgery or other health procedure where there are risks of clotting.
Dosage and administration
As this medicine is administered by injection you are likely to have it carried out at a local health clinic by a nurse or physician to ensure it is done correctly.
Attend all future appointments, as your physician will usually need to monitor your response closely and adjust future dosages accordingly when required.
Side effects
If you suffer any side effects which persist, worsen, worry you, or bother you, inform your physician as soon as possible.
Possible side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Confusion
- Chills
- Hair loss
- Loss of balance and/or coordination
- Bloody urine, coughing, or other unusual bleeding
