Uses
Lanthonate is prescribed to patients who have a kidney disease and are on dialysis. It works to reduce the high levels of phosphate in the blood.
Dosage and administration
How much you take and how often will depend upon the strength of the Lanthonate and your condition. Take strictly as directed by your physician, with meals. The tablet must be chewed before you swallow it. Do not swallow Lanthonate tablets whole.
Do not alter your dose or suddenly stop taking Lanthonate without consulting your physician beforehand, even if you are feeling better. If you do, your symptoms may get worse and increase the risk of unwanted side effects.
If your physician has put you on a diet and exercise regime, follow it carefully.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.
Side effects
As with all medications, Lanthonate has the potential to cause side effects in some patients. Common side effects of Lanthonate include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, a runny nose, nausea, sneezing, a dialysis graft blockage, hypotension, and difficulty using your bowel. If you experience these symptoms continue taking your medication and contact your physician.
Precautions
Do not take Lanthonate if you are allergic to it or to any of its ingredients.
Tell your physician if you have allergies to any other medications, dyes, food, preservatives, or any other substances, if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, and what other prescription, nonprescription, or herbal and dietary supplements you are taking.
Tobacco, certain foods, and alcohol may interact with Lanthonate, so discuss with your physician your use of these substances while taking this medication.
Tell your physician if you have a bowel obstruction or any other gastrointestinal tract problems, Crohn's disease, a stomach ulcer, or an inflammatory disease of the colon.
