Uses
Lariago DS (Chloroquine) is an anti-malarial drug given to treat or prevent malaria. Malaria is typically contracted by being bitten by a malaria carrying mosquito. It successfully destroys malaria parasites found in red blood cells, however does not effectively fight parasites found in other parts of the body. For this reason it is often prescribed to be taken alongside other medication such as primaquine to better prevent malaria.
In addition to malaria, this treatment may also used to treat ameba and lupus.
Dosage and administration
Lariago DS (Chloroquine) should be taken exactly as prescribed and instructed by your doctor. Correct dosage can vary depending on the patient, and taking incorrectly may reduce the patient’s protection against malaria.
Patients usually start dosing weekly 1 or 2 weeks before they travel to a malaria-risk country. Dosing then continues once per week until the patient has been out of the malaria-risk country for between 4 and 8 weeks. Dosing is usually done alongside a meal to help prevent patients experiencing an upset stomach after dosing.
In order to further reduce the risk of malaria, patients should try to prevent being bitten as much as possible by covering their skin.
