Propanthaline is used to treat stomach cramps or stomach spasms, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), enuresis (involutary urination). It is also used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. Propanthaline is an antimuscarinic agent that works be relaxing smooth (involuntary) muscles. Pro-Banthine is also used to treat peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal) and gastritis.
How Does Propanthaline Work?
Propanthaline works by blocking acetylcholine. Acetylcholine binds with muscurinic receptors in smoothe muscle causing involuntary contraction of the muscle. For example, in the stomach, gut or intestine when you have stomach cramps, or in the bladder causing urination. By blocking the binding of acetylcholine Propanthaline helps to keep these muscles relaxed.
Drug Interactions
Propanthaline may interact with the following. Please let your physician know if you are taking: anticholinergics, antimyasthenics, Cisapride, corticosteroids, Digoxin, Haloperidol, Ketoconazole, Levodopa, Metoclopramide, opoid analgesics, phenothiazines, Potassium Chloride, urinary alkalisers.
Propanthaline Side Effects
This medication may cause stomach ache, flushing, problems sleeping, headache, blurred vision, constipation, dry mouth, reduced sweating, drowsiness or thirst. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your physician.
Notify your physician if you develop: confusion, tremors, rapid or irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
