Uses
Radanil (Benznidazole) is an anti-protozoal systemic drug which is prescribed as a treatment for American trypanosomiasis.
This infection is also known as Chagas' disease and this medication works by acting on microtubules and destroying tiny one cell animals called protozoa.
Dosage and administration
Consult physician for your correct dosage. Dosage can vary from patient to patient depending on their personal health and the condition being treated.
Adult patients, and children of 12 years upwards, are typically prescribed 5mg to 7mg for a period of 30 to 60 days.
Elderly patients, or children under 12 years of age will normally require a lower dose, as determined by their physician.
Tablets should be taken alongside a meal, typically twice a day alongside breakfast and dinner.
Side effects
Common side effects include those listed below. If any side effects become bothersome, or start to worsen, inform your physician as soon as you are able to.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdomen pains
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Restlessness
- Numb or tingling sensations
- Confusion
- Convulsions
- Insomnia
- Memory loss
- Concentration loss
- Weak hands and/or feet
- Reddened skin
Less common side effects which can be more serious include chills, fever symptoms, skin rashes, sore throat, abnormal bleeding, bruising. If you notice any of these adverse effects, consult your physician as soon as possible for further advice.
Precautions
Prior to using Radanil you should always disclose any of the following to your physician.
- If you are pregnant or planning to conceive
- If you are breastfeeding
- If you have any allergies
- If you are taking any other medicine or drugs (including painkillers, inflammatory drugs, aspirin, blood thinners, supplements, vitamins, narcotics, tobacco, and alcohol)
- If you have any other past or current medical conditions, for example heart, kidneys, liver, and blood conditions
