Uses
Ribavirin is used to treat hepatitis C, as well as certain other conditions. It belongs to a group of other medicines referred to as anti-viral, anti-infectives. Another use for this medication is in combination with interferon to treat chronic infections. Consult your physician for a full list of possible uses.
Dosage and administration
Always use as advised by your physician. The following information is meant only as a general guideline.
Typically capsules are taken alongside meals and a glass of water. Capsules should be swallowed whole without being chewed, crushed, or dissolved. Aim to always dose at the same time(s) each day.
Side effects
The following side effects are some of the more commonly reported. Inform your physician if any become worrying or bothersome.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Mild headaches
- Dry mouth
- Coughing
- Sinus problems
- Lack of appetite
- Painful joints
- Insomnia
More serious side effects which can be dangerous include those listed below. If you notice any of the following you should inform your physician immediately.
- Severe headaches
- Severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Bloody/tarry/pale/dark stool
- Chest/back/stomach/muscle pains
- Mood changes such as confusion, depression, anxiety, aggression, or concentration difficulties
- Irregular heartbeat or heart rate
- Faintness, dizziness, tiredness, or weakness
- Numb limbs
- Mouth cores
- Skin rashes/peeling/blistering/swelling/redness/or irritation
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Psoriasis
- Jaundice
- Hearing changes
- Vision changes
- Taste changes
- Weight changes
- Urination changes
- Symptoms of a fever such as chills
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as rashes, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling
Precautions
This medication is not suitable for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are in any doubt about the safety, consult your physician and discuss your concerns.
While taking this medication, patients are advised to make use of additional methods of contraception to decrease the chances of conceiving, as this medication can cause birth defects. It can also be harmful when passed through breast milk.
Before you begin using this medication it is important you disclose all of the following to your physician.
- Any allergies you have
- If you are taking any other medication including all off-the-shelf supplements and vitamins
- If you have any other existing conditions especially those which are blood, heart, kidney, liver, or nervous system related
