Apo-Nicotinic (Nicotinic Acid) (sometimes called Niacin or vitamin B3) works together with a healthy diet to lower the lipid (fat) and cholesterol levels in the body. This may help to reduce the occurrence or risk of heart attacks in patients who may be at risk due to factors such as high cholesterol or a history of cardiovascular events. Its mechanism of action may be due to it blocking free fatty acids from being released and increasing the action of lipoprotein, so as to bring about an increase in the amount of triglycerides (fats) which are removed from the blood. Indications for this medicine can include atherosclerosis (coronary artery disease), dyslipidaemia, niacin deficiency and other conditions not listed here.
Apo-Nicotinic (Nicotinic Acid) comes in the form of 500mg strength tablets which are intended for oral administration. The required daily dosage and duration of treatment will be carefully calculated by your physician, and individualized so as to meet your treatment requirements. In some cases, patients may be directed by the physician providing treatment to administer 1 tablet, 1 to 3 times per day. However, it is also possible that patients may be told to begin treatment with a lower dosage. These tablets may not be suitable for patients treating nicotinic acid deficiency due to the fact that this condition is normally treated with 10mg to 20mg per day. A lower strength medicine may be recommended by your physician.
If you suffer from any side effects while taking Apo-Nicotinic (Nicotinic Acid) tablets, ensure that you notify your physician. Possible side effects that can occur include:
Other more serious reactions that will require you to get medical treatment straight away include jaundice, discoloration of urine, losing consciousness and other severe adverse events which have not been referenced here.
Consuming hot drinks or alcohol after you have taken Apo-Nicotinic (Nicotinic Acid) tablets could make the occurrence of flushing more likely. Discuss this in detail with your physician before starting treatment.
Blood tests may be ordered by your physician during the course of treatment, and in some cases, other types of medical tests may be needed. Ensure that you attend all the appointments that your physician makes for you.
If you are being treated for fat or lipid reduction, other important parts of your therapy can include dieting and exercise. Make sure that you comply with all instructions that your physician gives to you.
