Fenistil Gel (Dimetinden Maleat) is a topical antihistamine which works by reducing itching and redness when applied directly to skin that is affected by allergies, dermatitis or urticaria. The active ingredient is an antiallergic medicine that is categorized as a potent histamine H1 receptor antagonist. It has also been shown to have local anesthetic action. Itching and erythema occurs as a result of an allergic skin reaction, and the symptoms are triggered when histamine (a natural substance that the body releases when exposed to allergens) attaches to the H1 receptors. This causes a chain reaction in which blood flows to the affected area, resulting in the characteristic itching and redness associated with allergies.
This gel acts locally at the affected area, and blocks the histamine from attaching to its receptors, thereby preventing the allergic response. Due to this, the itching and redness subsides, and a soothing effect is felt by the patient. Physicians have stated that it can remain effective for a prolonged period of time. In addition to allergies and dermatitis, it can also be used to relieve itching caused by skin viruses. A medical study examined its effects if used in the treatment of pruritis caused by sunburn, insect bites and contact allergies to plants. Many patients reported feeling a cooling effect after applying the gel to the skin.
Fenistil Gel (Dimetinden Maleat) is for topical use. Your physician will tell you how much of it is needed to treat your symptoms, and specific information related to the frequency of administration will also be given. Strict compliance is needed by all patients. In the majority of cases, patients will be told to apply a thin layer of the gel to the area that is suffering from redness and itching, or else to the site of the insect bite. It should be gently rubbed in. Reapply as directed by your physician, but remember that excess use will not increase its effectiveness, but will increase the risk of side effects.
Patients treating itchy skin with Fenistil Gel (Dimetinden Maleat) should be aware of the possible side effects, which may include a mild burning or stinging sensation at the application spot. Make sure that your physician is informed if any reactions occur, as the suitability of treatment may need to be reassessed.
In rare cases, serious side effects such as allergic dermatitis and other severe reactions that have not been referenced in this paragraph may occur.
Fenistil Gel (Dimetinden Maleat) must not be ingested orally or applied to mucus membranes. Special care should be taken to ensure that it does not come into contact with the eyes, and patients are advised to wash their hands after treatment (unless the hands are being treated).
If your dermatological itching and redness does not improve, or if your symptoms become worse, consult your physician.
